It wasn’t the worst of starts to the season in terms of waiver wire suggestions. If you were in need of goals, I’m sorry, but we didn’t help you there. However, if you needed assists or a positive plus/minus, we had you covered! We had a total of one goal in our suggestions but had a combined ten assists. I’d like to get more goals on our books for Week 3 and see our goal keeper be a bit better. Well, let’s get into it then!
Each week, Nate will suggest his favorite waiver wire additions for the upcoming scoring week. He’ll tend to keep his suggestions under 40-percent owned on Yahoo. Every scoring position (C, LW, RW, D & G) will be included in each edition of this series. You can find last week’s results below and overall season results at the end of this article. At least one of the suggestions will be owned in less than 10-percent of leagues to cater to as many leagues as possible.
Week 2 Results
Charlie Coyle, C/RW, Boston Bruins - 15:33 TOI/G, 1 G, 2 A, +1 & 1 PPP
Jakob Silfverberg, RW, Anaheim Ducks - 16:37 TOI/G, 3 A & +2
Jonathan Drouin, C/LW, Montreal Canadiens - 18:03 TOI/G, 3 A, -1 & 1 PPP
Bowen Byram, D, Colorado Avalanche - 18:01 TOI/G & 2 A
Anthony Stolarz, G, Anaheim Ducks - 5 GA & 31 S
Week 3 Suggestions
Trevor Zegras, C/LW, Anaheim Ducks - Owned in 38% of Yahoo Leagues
Week 3 Matchups: vs. WPG, vs. BUF, @VGK & vs. MON
Trevor Zegras skates on the Ducks’ first line and then gets ice time on the team’s second power play unit. He’s yet to produce a huge statline with just one point to start the season, but has at least three shots on goal in each of his last four games. It’s inevitable that some of those shots will start to hit the back of the net with that type of volume. Grab Zegras now before he starts scoring and it’s too late.
Derrick Brassard, C/LW, Philadelphia Flyers - Owned in 7% of Yahoo Leagues
Week 3 Matchups: @EDM, @VAN & @CGY
The Flyers’ line of Brassard, Cam Atkinson and Joel Farabee has been the top producing line to start the NHL season. Atkinson and Farabee are owned in the majority of leagues, but Brassard is owned in just 7-percent of leagues. Brassard has a goal, four assists and a plus-six to start the season. We’re not sure how long this line can continue to produce the way it is, but even if they stall out soon, Brassard is a must add in deeper leagues as he’s owned in less than 10-percent of leagues.
Anthony Duclair, LW/RW, Florida Panthers - Owned in 28% of Yahoo
Week 3 Matchups: vs. ARI, vs. BOS, @DET & @BOS
The Florida Panthers are red hot out of the gate. Anthony Duclair skates on the first line of this team and is owned in less than a third of leagues. Duclair scored a goal in each of the Panthers’ first three games to start this season and has a plus-six. I’d like to see some more ice time out of Duclair, but adding him now is the type of move that can set you up for the future.
Evan Bouchard, D, Edmonton Oilers - Owned in 17% of Yahoo Leagues
Week 3 Matchups: vs. PHI & @VAN
Evan Bouchard is averaging over 20 minutes-per-game and is doing it all. From blocking shots, to taking shots and producing points, he’s all over the box score. He has a goal and two assists to start the season with 14 shots on goal and has an impressive 11 blocks. A huge game against the the Ducks on October 19th has propelled his fantasy total but has since gone for 9.6 and 6.9 fantasy points over his last two games respectively.
Jonathan Bernier (New Jersey Devils) - Owned in 12% of Yahoo Leagues
Week 3 Matchups: vs. CGY, @PIT & vs. CLS
I know Bernier is currently out with a lower body injury but I expect his absence to be just one game. This is a streaming suggestion here, assuming Bernier is able to get back into the team’s top line. Mackenzie Blackwood is trending in the right direction to make his season debut as he recovers from a heel injury. Bernier has two victories on the season and will be a decent play as long as Blackwood remains sidelined.
