We found a few gems to hunt for on your league’s waiver wire. With many game postponements, it’s important to stay active with “plugging-and-playing” free agents where needed.
Depending on your league’s roster size, you should be stocking up on multiple position eligible players. It allows for flexibility throughout your lineup in the event of postponed games.
Pius Suter, C/LW/RW, Chicago Blackhawks
Yahoo: 19% Owned
Week 6 Games: @CNJ, @CBJ, vs. DET & vs. DET
Suter’s statistics don’t jump off the page at you. He has a modest six goals, four assists, minus-one and 43 shots on goal. At the start of the season we talked about how important opportunity is in fantasy hockey and how it relates to ice time. Suter is averaging 19:00 over his last five games. Here’s the kicker, he's eligible at all three forward positions as well. A great piece to have on your bench for the season.
Joe Thornton, C/LW, Toronto Maple Leafs
Yahoo: 40% Owned
Week 6 Games: vs. CGY, vs. CGY & @EDM.
The 41 year old known as “Jumbo Joe” may be the NHL’s Tom Brady, as far as longevity goes; since Thornton has zero titles. Regardless, his play over the last three games has been amazing. Tallying two goals, four assists and a stellar plus-six over that three game span. His ice time has also went from around 12:00-per-game to 17:00-per-game.
Damon Severson, D, New Jersey Devils
Yahoo: 9% Owned
Week 6 Games: vs. BUF, @BUF, vs. WSH & vs. WSH
I know what you are thinking, “the Devils have only played two games in February," and I get it, but he is averaging over 22:00-per-game on the season. In those two games in February Severson has two assist (one on the PP), plus-two and has played over that 22:09 season average. In a small pool of free agent defensemen, Severson can be a nice addition.
Elvis Merzlikins, G, Columbus Blue Jackets
Owned: 62% Owned
Week 6 Games: vs. CHI, vs. CHI, @NSH & @NSH
This is a tough call since Merzlikins and Korpisalo are seemingly splitting time. However, Korpisalo has been not been good over his past seven starts with a 3-4 record and 29 total goals against in that span. Merzlikins is going to get his opportunity to show what he can do. If he plays well he could become the number-one goalie or at the very least push for more starts. Goalies are at a premium across the fantasy spectrum.
